Self-Care and Renewal                                                         September 2008

Stop. Close your eyes.
Take a deep breath and take it all in…

The older I get, the more I come to appreciate the value of stillness and simplicity. Doing less and Being more.

This may sound odd coming from a self-proclaimed thrill-seeker whose life and work runs at a sprint most of the time, but I am finally beginning to grasp a life lesson that the Buddhists have known for centuries:

quote

I've been doing a lot of introspection lately and have come to realize that a disproportionate amount of my energy, time, and resources have been spent at work and in service to others. While that is not inherently a bad thing, what's disturbing is the unhealthy pattern that has shown up in my life:

                   WORK - SERVICE - BURNOUT - ILLNESS - RENEWAL

This has been going on for YEARS, and it's neither a healthy way nor the best way of being a powerful contribution in the world. Somehow I think I've connected my self-worth with how much I'm able to do and give, and taking time for myself is only something I do as a treat or on vacation. I've had it completely backwards all this time! (lightbulb moment!)

quote

How is it that I always thought of taking personal time as selfish and indulgent? I'm not sure where that notion came from, but it sure strikes me as absurd now. Giving from a place of depletion, or giving from a place of wholeness? Hmmmmmmm…which of those might be the more powerful?

At 37, I'm now discovering that the most powerful way of being a contribution in the world is to be the very best, healthy version of myself - and the greatest gift I can offer is to be an inspiring role model to others. And that is enough. I'm going to defer to the Buddhists on this one…

quote

So as we all look toward the last 4 months of 2008…
  • What are the things you will prioritize to nourish your mind, body and spirit?
  • Where are you out of balance?
  • And what will you do to carve out some time for YOU on an ongoing basis?

Cheers to balance, wellness and personal renewal so that we each can shine brightly!
