Stillness and Renewal
September 2005
In this day and age, there are so many competing demands on our time and attention that we seldom make the time to
breathe, reflect, and appreciate the moment. But at what cost? It is only when our mental/physical/spiritual tanks
are full that we can give the world the best we have to offer each day.
As someone with a notoriously busy schedule, it has been quite a process to find that elusive "balance" that is
talked so much about. But what I have learned is that "balance" isn't a skill you master, but a gift of daily renewal
you give yourself.
I call it "Sandy Time". Some days, it may be a few minutes of meditation as I start my day, or a walk on the seawall
in the late afternoon, watching a sunset, or an evening soak in the tub with the phone turned off and some classical
music on. I've noticed that when I take my "Sandy Time" to slow down and relax, to quiet the mind - my spirit comes
alive again, and by some miracle, I become infinitely more productive.

This practice has given me a peace and freedom I didn't know were possible before, and a much healthier mind and body.
What could you do for yourself today to renew your spirit?
Tip: A speaking colleague of mine, Patricia Katz, writes a weekly column called 'Pause' which arrives in my email Inbox on Wednesday every week, and it's a lovely reminder to slow down and not miss the simple pleasures of life. Highly recommended!
