The Woman in the Mirror…                                                         August 2008

Sandy with her insulin pump As I look in the mirror and reflect on turning 37
this month, I have a newly found sense of peace and contentment with the woman I see in the mirror. After years of being my own worst critic,
I guess one could say that I've grown into my imperfections.

Every perceived 'defect' tells a story and I'm proud to have come through what I have with grace and wisdom. This body has survived a 20-year fight with diabetes. It has endured more injections than I can count; bumps, bruises, broken bones, gall bladder attacks and bouts of adrenal exhaustion from the crazy life I lead. It ain't perfect, but it's what I've got!

I live intensely and passionately and make no apologies for that. It is who I am. Whether it's jumping head first from an airplane, to jumping with my whole heart into a relationship, I leap with no regrets. I have my share of scars to show for it, but I figure life is richer for having 'swung for the fences' instead of sitting on the sidelines. It is simply not in my nature to not pursue whatever I'm doing with reckless abandon!

I used to worry incessantly about what other people thought, but what I've learned now is that the only person whose approval matters is my own. That too is a new thing. While I have read that 100x before in a variety of books and it is seemingly intuitively obvious, it is only now when I actually feel that as a truth for me.

It has been a long and winding road full of challenges and heartache to get to this place of acceptance, but I wouldn't trade that journey in, as it has also been filled with unspeakable joy and memorable moments that I will forever cherish. And this colourful mosaic of people, places and experiences that is my life is uniquely my own.

As I gear up to enter my next chronological year, I close with something I found in one of my Idea Books - it's a quote I wrote down from somewhere, but I don't know who the author is! Enjoy…

Cheers to the continuing evolution of age and all that it means to be human…
