The Miracle of Health                                                                      April 2005
Every day you wake up and you're still above ground is a great day - and an
opportunity to have an adventure!

Do you remember the last time you were flattened by the flu, feverish and lying on the couch with a cold compress on your head? I don't know about you, but every time I get sick, I promise myself never to take for granted again the mere absence of pain on a regular day.

Like in many other areas of life - relationships, peace, and technology for example - health can be one of those things that we only seem to pay close attention to when it is threatened. Consider that you don't usually think about the value of your printer until it breaks down when you're under pressure of a tight deadline!

Ralph Waldo Emerson

For me, I consider myself blessed to have diabetes - an illness that forces me to look after my health on a daily basis in order to function effectively out in the world. As much as I would describe it as a neverending siege to try and manage every day - constant blood sugar monitoring, multiple insulin injections, and all the frustration that goes along with such an imperfect science - I am enormously grateful to have the opportunity to be here at all, as prior to the discovery of insulin back in 1922, diabetes would have meant certain death.

The latest discovery of science that has affected me personally in the past month has been the introduction to Canada of a new type of insulin - Lantus - which I can only classify as a miracle for the kind of balance and steadiness it has brought to my blood sugar control. So it got me thinking… "Do people without diabetes have any idea how amazing it is to feel 'normal' this way?! WOW!!!"

Whatever your health condition or personal situation is, consider that it could always be worse - and as long as you are here and alive and continue to wake up every day - it's a reason to celebrate!

What could you do today to acknowledge and take care of your health?
