What is it about the underdog that captures our imagination so much?

I recently saw a video on YouTube that brought me to tears, and apparently >40 million viewers agree that there's something about a person having "a moment of greatness" that inspires us all.

Susan Boyle was just a woman from "a collection of villages" in Britain who appeared to be an unlikely candidate for stardom until she seized her moment on "Britain's Got Talent"…

She left the audience and judges at first stunned, and then cheering, as she delivered a stirring and inspired rendition of "I Dreamed a Dream" from Les Miserables - indeed an appropriate song choice.

Why do we care?

When one of us "mere mortals" defies the odds and dares to show others their true beauty from the inside out, we glimpse it in ourselves. And we hope that we too can someday experience such a moment. To feel like we've been heard, and that our life has mattered in some small way.
